Long Island Iced Tea & Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World

This week we are recommending a combination that we hope will encourage you to think outside your comfort zone when it comes to analyzing projects, creating teams, and choosing dinner guests.

Read of the week

Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World

In Range, David Epstein explores the psychology of a generalists’ approach to problem solving versus the prevailing conception of our time that specialists have the upper hand. Time and time again, Epstein shows that while there will always be a need for specialists, a polymath’s approach is often useful to contextualize and land the innovation plane (and yes, that metaphor is a specific shout out to our partner, Steve Monaghan, a commercial pilot in addition to his myriad business accomplishments).

Epstein, who is also author of the New York Times bestseller, The Sports Gene, goes on to give example after example of polymaths consistently outperforming their more hyper focused colleagues — in the end knowing a lot about a lot wins the day.

Cocktail of the week

Long Island Iced Tea

What better cocktail to pair with this opus than the drink you order when you can’t make your mind up: the Long Island Iced Tea. This cocktail that elegantly (usually) combines the blessed sacraments of vodka, tequila, rum, triple sec, gin, and a splash of cola will definitely get your creativity flowing while enjoying Epstein’s work.
